Why nobody publishes a number

If you have searched for this already, you will have noticed that every clinic listing and medical-tourism directory covering Lebanon answers with “price on request”. That is frustrating, and it is worth explaining rather than repeating.

A price for “varicose vein treatment” is roughly as meaningful as a price for “dental work”. Two legs that look similar from the outside can need very different work: one a single short injection session, the other a laser closure of a failed trunk vein followed by two sessions tidying the surface. Quoting a headline figure before the scan would mean quoting a number that changes — which is the practice most people are rightly suspicious of.

The four things that actually move the price

• The technique. Injection sclerotherapy, foam, endovenous laser and phlebectomy are not equivalent in cost. Laser involves more equipment and more time than an injection session.
• The number of sessions. The single biggest factor. A limited patch of spider veins is not the same undertaking as a leg with a failed saphenous trunk feeding surface branches.
• One leg or two. Often both are involved, and often to different degrees.
• How long it has been left. Advanced disease, skin changes and larger vein networks take more work than the same problem caught earlier. This is the part patients control.

What the consultation includes

The consultation is where the number comes from. It includes the venous duplex ultrasound scan of the leg, the diagnosis explained to you in plain terms, the treatment options with the reasoning for each, and a specific quote for the plan being proposed.
