Vein disease is not only about how a leg looks. These are the five signs that bring most patients in. If two or more sound familiar, the leg is worth scanning.

Bulging blue or purple veins
Twisted, rope-like veins that show through the skin on the calves or thighs. They stand out more after standing and settle when the legs are raised.

A dragging heaviness that builds through the day, often with swollen ankles after long standing, a long flight or a long shift.

Expectations
Every case tells a different story.
Two legs that look the same from the outside can need very different work, and can end up with different results. Anyone who promises you an outcome before scanning the leg is guessing.
What actually decides how much a leg improves, and how many sessions it takes:
- Which veins are involved. Fine surface threads behave differently from a failed trunk vein under pressure.
- How long it has been left. Longstanding disease with skin changes takes more work than the same problem caught early.
- Whether the source was treated. Clearing the surface while leaving the vein feeding it is the most common reason people arrive here already treated elsewhere, without lasting result.
- Your body. Reabsorption speed genuinely varies between people, and so does bruising.
Treatment can clear the veins that are treated. It cannot stop the body from forming new ones later, particularly through pregnancy or with a strong family history. That is what follow-up is for.

The part most people are anxious about is the part that takes the least time. Here it is, start to finish.

A duplex ultrasound maps which veins have failed and where. Painless, takes minutes. Nothing is treated before this is done.

The vein is closed from the inside
A fine needle delivers a solution that seals the damaged vein. Blood immediately reroutes through healthy veins.

You walk out
No general anaesthetic, no hospital stay. A compression stocking, and back to a normal day. Mild bruising for a week or two is normal.

The body clears it
Over the following weeks the sealed vein is reabsorbed and fades from the surface. Follow-up checks the result.
Straight answers
The questions everybody asks.
Will the veins come back?
A vein that has been properly closed does not come back.
Once it is sealed, the body reabsorbs it over the following weeks and the blood is redirected through healthy veins. That vein is gone. What can happen is that the body forms new varicose veins somewhere else — which is why follow-up matters, and why pregnancy is one of the most common reasons veins reappear in women who were treated years earlier.
Does it hurt?
It is a fine needle. Most patients describe a small sting.
No general anaesthetic is used and nothing is cut. Afterwards, expect mild bruising over the treated veins for one to two weeks — that is normal and it fades. Patients regularly describe the procedure as “quick and almost pain-free”.
Do I need surgery?
Not every varicose vein requires surgery.
Many cases are treated with injection therapy — sclerotherapy or foam sclerotherapy — or with endovenous laser, all of which close the vein without an operation. Surgery is reserved for the cases that genuinely need it. Which category a leg falls into is decided by the duplex ultrasound scan, not by looking at the skin.
How much does it cost?
It depends on what the leg actually needs, and that is only known after the scan.

Do creams, sprays or supplements work?
No. Nothing applied to the skin can close a damaged vein.
Products sold online promising to remove varicose veins do not work, and the time spent on them is time the vein spends getting worse. A failed vein has to be closed or removed by a qualified vein specialist. If a product claims otherwise, that is the tell.
How long until I see results?
Weeks, not months — and the symptoms usually improve first.
Spider veins generally clear over about four weeks. Larger varicose veins take longer, because the body has to reabsorb more. The heaviness and aching often ease much sooner, sometimes after the first session.
